Empadronamiento in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Adeje

The padrón, each municipality’s roll of residents, is a town-hall register, not a police one, and you sign up where you actually live: in Santa Cruz de Tenerife at one of seven OAIC citizen offices with a cita previa, or online with a digital certificate, and in Adeje at the SAC on Calle Grande, by appointment. Getting your name onto that list is called empadronamiento; here is how the two towns with a NIE office run it, from their own pages, and what to check if you live elsewhere.

Which town hall is yours

Resort names and municipalities do not match. Los Cristianos belongs to Arona, Costa Adeje to Adeje, and Playa de las Américas straddles the two, so the exact address decides. La Laguna, Puerto de la Cruz, Candelaria and Granadilla de Abona each run their own register too; this page covers Santa Cruz and Adeje, so for any other town, check its own town hall.

If you rent in one municipality and own in another, you register where you actually live. The padrón records residence, not property.

Empadronamiento Santa Cruz de Tenerife: the OAIC offices

Santa Cruz registers residents at its Oficinas de Atención e Información Ciudadana (OAIC). You can go in person with a cita previa booked on the city’s e-office, or apply through its electronic registry with a digital certificate, a DNIe or Cl@ve. According to the procedure page, registration is free.

La Granja, the central office, opens on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:30 to 13:30 and on Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30 to 18:00. The other offices open on weekday mornings from 8:30 to 13:30, and from July to September every office closes at 13:00. The city’s information line, 010 or 922 606 010, answers on weekdays from 8:00 to 15:00.

What Santa Cruz asks you to bring

  • The hoja padronal, the registration form, signed by every adult being registered; the cadastral reference of the home is mandatory
  • An identity document for each person: for EU, EEA and Swiss citizens, the registration certificate showing the NIE plus a passport or ID card; for other foreigners, the TIE showing the NIE or, failing that, the passport
  • For children: under 14, the family book or a birth certificate if they have no ID; from 14, the same ID as adults; for minors who are not emancipated, the parents’ declaration in the annex that applies (I, II or VIII)
  • Proof of address from the list in Anexo IX; if someone is already registered at the home, tick the “autorización de persona empadronada” box and bring that person’s ID and their title to the home
  • To register at another person’s home or in a collective dwelling, Anexo XI
  • Applying for someone else: a notarial power of attorney or an apud acta designation

Empadronamiento Adeje: the SAC on Calle Grande

In Adeje, the padrón is handled by the Oficina de Atención al Ciudadano (SAC) at C/ Grande 1. A new registration needs an appointment on the town hall’s cita previa site: department “Atención a la Ciudadanía (Ayto Adeje)”, procedure “Altas Padrón (OAC)”. Padrón certificates (volantes) and travel certificates (certificados de viaje) need no appointment.

The padrón desk works weekday mornings from 8:00 to 13:00, until 12:00 in July and August, inside an office open from 8:00 to 15:00 (922 756 200). The SAC also records changes of address, renews the registration of non-EU foreigners and issues padrón certificates. Adeje publishes its list of documents on its e-office: confirm it with the SAC when you book.

Renewals, and why the NIE office cares

Non-EU foreigners without permanent residence have to renew their registration every two years: Santa Cruz states it on its procedure page, and Adeje’s SAC lists that renewal among its services.

A recent certificado de empadronamiento is also the simplest proof of an island address, for a TIE card, for healthcare and for car paperwork. Certificates carry a date and offices usually prefer a recent one, so ask for yours close to your appointment.

On Tenerife

On the south coast the usual slip is the wrong town hall: an apartment in Los Cristianos is registered in Arona, a villa above Costa Adeje at the SAC in Adeje, and an address in Playa de las Américas can belong to either. In the capital, the OAIC network means the nearest desk is rarely far, from San Andrés to Añaza; La Laguna, next door, keeps its own register.

Questions on this topic

Can I do the empadronamiento in Santa Cruz online?

You can book the appointment on the city’s e-office and, with a digital certificate, a DNIe or Cl@ve, apply through its electronic registry without going in.

Do I need a cita previa for the padrón in Adeje?

For a new registration, yes, on citaprevia.adeje.es. For a padrón certificate or a travel certificate, no.

Can I register before I have a NIE?

It depends on your passport and on the town hall. Santa Cruz asks EU citizens for the registration certificate showing the NIE, with a passport or ID card, and other foreigners for the TIE or, failing that, the passport.

Does a holiday-home owner need the padrón?

Only if the island is where you actually live. A home used for holidays does not make you a resident, and registering is not a way to obtain residence.
